140,000 sq. ft. of “DrainScape” pervious concrete was installed as the primary paving system at the Glendale Park & Ride facility. Located just west of the new Arizona Cardinals stadium in Glendale, AZ. The new public transit parking lot was designed to provide covered parking for the commuters choosing to save money and avoid the frustrations of fighting traffic in Metropolitan Phoenix.
Progressive Concrete Works, Inc. was awarded the contract for the installation of pervious concrete, primarily as a result of its experience with this unique concrete product. At the time that bids were being taken, Progressive was the only Arizona based company with any experience in the installation of pervious concrete. To date, the Glendale Park & Ride facility is the largest installation of pervious concrete known to exist in the Southwestern United States.
The project was designed with several goals in mind starting with a sustainable storm water management solution. Working with the design team, the City of Glendale wanted to be able to utilize as much of the space as possible while at the same time installing an environmentally friendly product, all at the lowest cost possible. With DrainScape pervious concrete, they were able to achieve all of this. Besides utilizing some recycled materials in the mix, DrainScape provides first the flush pollution mitigation through infiltration into the sub-grade below and also helps to reduce the urban heat island effects when used in lieu of conventional asphalt. During storms, it recharges ground water and underground aquifers directly beneath the site, all of which makes it a very Green, earth-friendly product.
