Award Description
Clark & Sullivan Construction recently completed the Library/Classroom Addition, a 15-month project, for the College of Southern Nevada at the Charleston Campus. This 78,110 square foot building sits on 6 acres and includes a new library with classrooms and a lecture hall. Clark & Sullivan worked together with Domingo Cambeiro Corporation Architects to meet the short construction time frame using the Construction Manager-At-Risk method to deliver this unique project to the College of Southern Nevada and the State Public Works Board. The construction plans were approved on July 6, 2008, and the steel erection began August 21, just a few weeks later making it possible for the project to finish on time and under budget. Substantial completion was accomplished a mere eight months later!
Its unique features include dramatic natural lighting at the north end of the building, a stonework facade, exterior insulation and finish system (E.I.F.S.), and a large open space for the library. The striking large span of glass at the north end of the structure and the stonework at the exterior south end were installed vertically using a running bond design. Exclusive compasso rings, stainless steel handrails and acoustical wall panels were used to tie the design together throughout the structure. Utilizing the acoustical wall panels allowed the auditorium to be on the same floor as the main library.
Working with DCC architects the team was able to deliver a larger building than originally intended at no extra cost to the owner. Clark & Sullivan Construction built the facility not only in the middle of an operational campus, but in the middle of Nevada's highest attended community college. One of the challenges the Clark & Sullivan team overcame was to connect the building to a sophisticated, fully operational central plant. The facility will be able to generate income through the sandwich shop and will also include WiFi.
