Description

Van Andel Institute Phase II is a 260,000 square foot addition containing approximately 90,000 square feet of lab space and is connected to the existing Van Andel Institute, a 162,000 square foot bio-molecular cancer research facility. The new addition will contain laboratory space, offices, meeting rooms, large gathering rooms, a library, cafeteria and common space for approximately 400 additional employees. Phase II completes the vision of Jay and Betty Van Andel for a world class cancer research facility to combat the effects of cancer and improve the quality of life for people who suffer from this debilitating disease. Phase II will be located directly west of the existing facility bounded by Crescent Street and Division Avenue on the south and west sides. Van Andel Institute Phase II will be a LEED certified facility. Sustainable design features include a green roof, storm water collection tank, photovoltaic solar panels, water efficient fixtures which reduce water consumption by 30%, heat recovery and energy savings through right sizing of equipment, and a completely automated building control system to reduce energy consumption. Sustainable construction practices include recycling more than 75% of construction waste, utilization of building materials with a high recycled content and utilization of locally manufactured materials to reduce transportation and greenhouse emissions. The architect for Phase II is Rafael Vinoly Architects, P.C. of New York City. Rafael Vinoly’s original design will be complete with Phase II. The construction manager for the Phase II addition is a joint venture between Hunt Construction Group of Indianapolis, Indiana and Owen-Ames-Kimball Co., a local contractor to Grand Rapids, Michigan with more than 117 years in the construction industry. Culhane & Fahrenkrug Consulting LLC was hired by Van Andel Institute to assemble the project team and oversee the cost, schedule, and budget issues.
