Platt Luggage BuildingSummary
Award DescriptionProject Participants
Architect – Antunovich & Associates, Chicago
The Platt Luggage Building (originally the Ginn & Co. Publishers Building) was built in the Beaux Arts style in 1907, by noted architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. The building was slated for demolition, until it was incorporated into the McCormick Place Exposition Center’s expansion project.
The building could not be included in its original location, so the façade was dismantled and entirely reassembled in a new location. During the project, special care was taken with the architectural details, including brick columns, limestone cornice, and brick arches above ground floor windows. Each brick and stone had to be marked and documented in construction drawings, as a road map for the masons.
