Description
EllisDon has completed construction of the prestigious Bay Adelaide Centre office tower in downtown Toronto. Substantial Performance was achieved on June 30, 2009, ahead of schedule. The building is designed as a landmark signature tower, and with its distinctive rooftop silhouette makes a unique and lasting architectural imprint on the Toronto skyline. The impressive 52-storey office tower contains over 1,525,000 square feet of rentable, Class A office space. Over 112,062 square feet of below grade retail space links this complex to the extensive downtown concourse network. Three levels of existing below grade parking provide space for approximately 1,100 vehicles.
EllisDon worked with Sota Glazing Inc. for the curtainwall systems on the Bay Adelaide Centre. Brookfield Properties, EllisDon and Sota Glazing Inc. worked together to establish the level of quality for exterior curtainwall, budget, logistical planning, scheduling and details. Once all of these aspects were acceptable to Brookfield Properties and EllisDon, we contracted with Sota Glazing Inc. to secure the delivery of the product to meet the fast-paced schedule.
EllisDon has also been challenged with the restoration of the historical facade at Bay and Temperance Streets. One of the two original buildings on the site was required to have two exterior walls removed, refurbished and reinstalled with new details. This process ensured that there ws no compromise between the interfaces of historical facade, the new curtainwall and storefront exterior wall systems.
The Bay Adelaide tunnel is Toronto's newest addition to the downtown pedestrian PATH system. The tunnel is twenty metres long by six metres wide, connecting Scotia Plaza to the Bay Adelaide Centre. Construction includes the drilling of 29 piles, the temporary support of many utility duct banks such as Bell Canada, Rogers Communications, Toronto Hydro and AllStream fiber optic cables. The project also includes the removal and replacement of a fully operational high-level city sewer interceptor, and the rerouting of another adjacent city sewer. The majority of work was completed during the day and placement of support beams and decking were installed in order to keep Adelaide Street open to the public and have trades continue working.
The tunnel is five metres below the city street with all utility cables and gas line permanently placed in the ceiling and water mains and sewers below the concourse level.
This project achieved LEED CS Gold.
