Description
EllisDon Toronto is the Construction Manager for George Brown Waterfront adjacent to Toronto Harbour.
The site is bounded by Lake Ontario and Queen's Quay, between Jarvis and Sherbourne Streets. This new construction will consist of 350,000 square feet of gross floor area and will include health and science plus regular classroom space. It also includes retail space at ground level, and below-grade parking for approximately 350 space. There are plans to connec to an adjacent block with an overhead bridge and underground tunnel.
The design and construction of the Waterfront Campus Development will adhere to guidelines outlined within the LEED(r) Canada NC-1.0 rating system. George Brown College intends that this development will incorporate renewable energy initiatives and meet a minimum of LEED(r) Gold standard. This project has a very tight schedule.
As a result of the site's proximity to the Toronto Harbour waterfront, the land parcel has specific geotechnical and environmental challenges: brown field development adjacent to Lake Ontario with the lake level approximately two metres below existing grade; excavate four levels below grade at close proximity to the Lake and extending into bedrock; shoring wall to support excavation and prevent groundwater infiltration; continuous monitoring of the existing dockwall due to adjacent construction; multi-contractors' coordination for Waterfront Development.
Project relevance: The George Brown College Project is located adjacent to Lake Ontario and is within the downtown core, thus being relevant to the "large urban environmentally sensitive area". The facility must also adhieve LEED certification.
