Descriptions
Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. - Michigan
Located just off the shore of Lake Michigan, the new High School Athletic Complex, Gene Rothi Memorial Stadium and Home of the Grand Haven Area Public Schools Buccaneers, is impressive. The dual home stadium bleacher system serving both football and lacrosse/soccer offers seating for up to 6,000 spectators. The side by side fields are comprised of synthetic turf and include an eight lane running track around the football field. The stadium includes a Field events area for long jump, pole vault, discus and shot put. Stadium facilities include a 3,000 square foot Home and Visitor concession/restroom building with additional band and storage rooms. There is a Team building for the home and visiting teams including training rooms and an official's room. A 52,000 square foot concrete plaza connects the stadium entrance, concession/restrooms, team rooms and bleacher seating. A circular engraved paver entrance around the main flagpole pays tribute to Mr. Rothi, Grand Haven students and athletes. The new scoreboard, lighting and sound systems add the finishing touch for both fields.
A new baseball press box/concession stand/restroom building was constructed to serve the (4) competition fields (2 baseball and 2 softball). The baseball press box/concession building was framed with wood trusses and a shingled roof.
Parking lot renovations for the new athletic complex include traffic control islands and an expanded bus loop drive as well as a 700 space overflow parking and tail gate area for spectators.
Due to construction being on the present High School site, traffic control for both student parking and student/parent access to the existing tennis court facility and baseball/softball fields located immediately adjacent to the new stadium posed an ongoing management/coordination issue throughout the construction period.
The schools sports teams including baseball, softball, cross country, football and tennis had to continue to practice and, with the exception of football, play games including tournament play throughout the construction process. This required daily coordination between Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. and Grand Haven Schools athletic department, as weather was a constant unknown and scheduling issue. In many cases, construction activities were adjusted to accommodate these sports schedules.

East Muskegon Roofing and Sheet Metal Co., Inc.
East Muskegon Roofing and Sheet Metal was awarded the roofing contract for the new athletic facilities at Grand Haven High School. The specified roofing system was a reinforced EPDM (rubber) membrane. There were a total of 5 different buildings with varying challenges. Two of the buildings were designed with curved walls. There were custom metal fabrications for the curved parapet caps and curved canopies. The Home Press Box roof was arched and elevated, making safety a top concern. Under the direction of the construction manager, Owen-Ames-Kimball Co, we maintained the schedule and maintained our safety.
