Located in the Heartside area of Grand Rapids, this new 38,500 SF facility will be a multi-functional, temporary residence and resource center, offering free lodging and support for cancer patients and their caregivers during treatment. The lodge will feature 20 private guest suites, large kitchen and dining area, cozy living rooms for relaxation and companionship, libraries offering internet connection and access, garden areas for refuge from struggles with serious illness, meditation room, game room and fitness center. The building will also house the administrative offices for the local ACS chapter. Construction was completed in November 2007 with an construction cost of $5,625,000.

Triangle Associates

The American Cancer Society-Hope Lodge and Peter M. Wege Guest House is located where cancer patients need it most - in Downtown Grand Rapids, near the Saint Mary’s Lacks Cancer Center. Built on a lot donated by the Saint Mary’s Cancer Center, the new 38,000 sq ft Hope Lodge offers out-of-town cancer patients and their caregivers a place to stay and take part in vital social services while they receive advanced health care services at local institutions.

The first floor of Hope Lodge houses the American Cancer Society’s regional offices and conference rooms. The second and fourth floors feature 20 guest suites for visiting patients, leaving the third floor for multiple prep station kitchens, a grand dining room, a cancer research library, meditation and fitness rooms.

The Hope Lodge was designed by Design Plus, Inc. as a LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) facility in accordance with the United States Green Building Council.

The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, Peter M. Wege Guest House is one of 26 Hope Lodge facilities in the United States, the first Hope Lodge in Michigan and the first in the country to become LEED Certified.

Buist Sheet Metal Company

Buist Sheet Metal fabricated and installed the architectural sheet metal work on the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge. The large overhang on the four story portion of the building has metal cornice, soffit, and fascia, with a standing seam roof above. The two story portion of the building features nine (9) bay windows with standing seam roofs. All of the siding, window trim, and soffit are wrapped in prefinished metal. The decorative metal panels and ornamental boxes below had to be measured individually to fit the woodwork.

The highlight of the building is the large Southeast corner bay with a round vertical face. The entire exterior surface is clad in custom formed metal to fit around the windows. The cornice, soffit, fascia, and decorative panels are each fit to the curved surface. The standing seam roof on top also has tapered panels to fit the curve. The ornamental box below this bay was expanded to include a large decorative panel with cross pieces to match those above.

These architectural features combine together to set this building apart as a beautiful home for the American Cancer Society in West Michigan.

D9 Systems, Inc. provided steel stud framing, exterior sheathing and drywall on this project.

Twin Lakes Nursery

This project was unique in that it included elements intended to respect environmental awareness. The installation of permeable pavers helped achieve this goal. Conventional paver units and landscape materials were also installed as part of this project.
