Descriptions

Cox Medendorp Olson Architects

The adaptive reuse and remodeling of the historic Old Federal Building, circa 1910, into the new home of the Grand Rapids Art Museum.  The project scope involved development of secure staff function and art storage areas, a new four-stop freight elevator, exhibition spaces, security systems, and exterior refurbishing.  All were accomplished within the context of consideration for the character of the original building.

The project also included the design of the children's gallery and activity area in the lower level.  Areas for exhibition, audio-visual presentation and children's studio activities are included.  Subsequent phased projects have included the gift shop, rental/sales shop, expanded furniture exhibition areas on the upper floors, a regional exhbition gallery, and a photography gallery.

Acoustics By Design

Acoustics By Design assisted the Museum with acoustical treatments in the Auditoria of the original historic building located at 155 North Division in downtown Grand Rapids in the mid 1990s. When plans started to incorporate the design of a new building, Acoustics By Design was pleased to be selected as the Acoustical and AV Consultant.
