Description

Robert F. Hastings Award

The Michigan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects selected Kevin Shultis, AIA, to receive the prestigious Hastings Award. He will receive his plaque at the Annual Celebration of Excellence in Architecture in Plymouth at the Inn at St. John on May 2. Architects are expected from across the state for the celebration. The Hastings Award is given in recognition of distinguished and significant service to the profession.

Kevin Shultis, AIA began his involvement with AIA Michigan in 2003 as a member of the Government Affairs Committee and soon thereafter was asked to chair the committee. He has been Chair or Co-Chair ever since. During his tenure, the AIA Government Committee has supported or authored legislation that benefits the profession, provided resistance and opposition to legislation that is potentially harmful to the profession and has endeavored to build strong and lasting relationships with state legislators and other government entities.

Shultis is a Vice President and Learning Studio Leader for SmithGroup. He started at the firm in 1998 and was elevated to Learning Studio Leader in 2003 and Vice President in 2005. He earned his architecture degree from The University of Michigan and lives in Birmingham.

Robert Hastings, FAIA was a Detroit architect with what is now called the Smithgroup. He rose through the local, state and national components of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and became national president in 1970. AIA Michigan created an award in 1978 in his honor.

The American Institute of Architects Michigan, headquartered in the historic Beaubien House across from the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, established its awards program to bring to public attention the value and importance of architectural excellence and to recognize those whose notable achievements encourage all to make excellence in architecture the standard.
