This renovation / adaptive reuse project literally moved back the hands of time at a Zeeland industrial facility that manufactured clocks for nearly a century. The complex, once Colonial Clock’s headquarters, now hosts high tech light manufacturing for ‘new economy’ companies.

Uncovering its former appearance, the existing EIFS exterior finish was removed to expose the original exterior brick. New windows with modern glass technology were installed to match the original façade design. Mixing the handsome heritage brick with contemporary materials, the existing steel structure’s CMU exterior shell was removed and replaced with glass and metal panels, reflecting the high tech business housed within.

Recapturing the beauty of the historic building was achieved by sandblasting the interior brick and structural heavy timber framing. Refinishing the original wood floors brought additional warmth while maintaining the historic impressions made by decades of use.

Removing barriers within the building, interior stairs were added to support visual connection and ease of movement from level to level. Clocks that were manufactured within the walls now adorn the former factory floor, marking time where time was once created. Vacant lease space, timeless in its simplicity, stands fresh and ready for new endeavors.
