Award Description
Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion was designed to be a welcoming, comfortable place to facilitate healing. Sustainability was also a key feature in the planning process, and in both of these capacities, Lemmen-Holton succeeded superbly. The building’s green features include: roof gardens; water-efficient landscaping; a plumbing system that reduces water use; roofing and hardscape materials that reduce the heat island effect; a high-efficiency H-VAC system; innovative control systems that maximize efficiencies for thermal and light energy usage; the extensive use of recycled and regional construction materials; and construction practices that maximized the use of low V-O-C paints, adhesives and carpeting
Furthermore, throughout construction, Christman’s team focused on maintaining superior indoor air quality. This soothing environment creates a communal feeling with nature with its ample use of daylighting and its expansive indoor/outdoor gardens. The pavilion features a stone fireplace, a waterfall that cascades down several floors, a life garden, and mediation space that creates a relaxed environment for both patients and visitors.
The Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion received LEED Gold for New Construction, making it the first Spectrum Health building to earn LEED certification.
