Award Description
In addition to its state-of-the-art medical technologies, the MSU Secchia Center also features some of the construction industry’s most modern technologies, making this building one of the most energy-efficient structures in West Michigan. The project was awarded LEED Gold certification earlier this year, in recognition of its many environmentally friendly features. The Secchia Center utilizes smart lighting throughout the building, as well as photovoltaic glass on the 8th floor to convert solar energy into electricity. The facility also features water reduction technologies both inside and outside of the building. The building was also designed with a heat recovery system, radiant floor heat in the atrium, and a ventilation system that detects carbon dioxide levels in the air and automatically adjusts for improved overall indoor air quality. The building’s location in an urban setting, its use of building materials from within 500 males and other green attributes also helped it achieve this distinction. The sustainability factor is considered highly consistent with the belief systems of the medical community, as well as the long-standing culture of a MSU as a land-grand University whose values include stewardship of the earth.
