Award Description

Functionality and world-class technology combine with beauty and sustainability to make the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital safe, welcoming, and eco-friendly. This LEED-certified project promotes wellness for both its patients and the greater community through its inspired design features and locally sourced construction materials.

Four years in the making, the Children’s Hospital was completed by teams of architects, construction managers, and subcontractors fully dedicated to the project. Construction of the hospital required quality workmanship as well as the most up-to-date technology available, including extensive use of BIM (building information modeling) to ensure that the various building systems were not in conflict.

The building’s colorful interior is designed to put patients and their families at ease. Every fixture, from furniture to artwork, was selected with the hospital’s young visitors in mind. Some of the hospital’s most striking features are the lobby’s 1,400 square foot brightly colored glass mosaic; the rooftop playground; the ice cream shop; the interactive video game glow wall; and the full height vision glass in each patient room.
