- Definition: New
- Budget: $7,400,000
- Date Completed: 06/01/2009
Award Description
Harrington Engineering was responsible for engineering and building a sustainable SPiRiT Gold rated campus/facility that could be jointly shared by the Armed Forces Reserve and the New York Army National Guard. This SPiRiT Gold certified campus/facility included the following structures: One (1) two-story 75,000 square foot training facility building with designated areas for both the Armed Forces Reserve and the New York Army National Guard; one (1) 15,000 square foot maintenance building; and two (2) 1,200 square foot unheated storage facilities. For this project, Harrington Engineering had to prepare a proposal for DTC that was within their established budget, and that would accurately encompass the original RFP design objects, specifications and time constraints of the U.S. Army, while preserving profitability. Given that the own was the United States Army, the project had many environmental and regulatory code standards that needed to be considered. However, the underlying challenge in the design and construction of the campus/facility was that it had to meet these identified regulatory code standards while reaching a SPiRiT Gold ration, which is equivalent to a LEED Gold certification. As part of this challenge, the Army's specification dictated that the campus/ training and maintenance facilities had to achieve a 30% reduction in energy over a baseline ASHRAE 90.1 building. In order to accomplish this, Harrington needed to utilize sophisticated energy modeling software and perform a room-by-room energy analysis.
